Iso-8

While Ares is a Protector on paper, his Damage Stat is one of the highest in-game so he will benefit a lot from having an attacker Class, like Raider or Striker. His Awakened Basic Ability can apply Immunity to Ares, this also happens on his Iso-8 attack, making Striker a slightly better choice.

T4 Priority

P – Passive ability

U – Ultimate ability

S – Special ability

B – Basic ability

All of Ares’s Abilities have Awakened versions, meaning that eventually, we will have to invest T4 materials into all abilities to unlock his full potential.

Passive – will prevent Ares from getting Stun while he has Charged. Ares can steal Charged on Spawn from his enemies and can gain 1 Charged after using his Special, so the Stun prevention will be in effect often, making it a useful upgrade.
Awakened Passive – will prevent enemies from spawning with Safeguard, making this Awakened Ability one of the best in the game and a priority for unlock.

Ultimate – will increase the damage and will flip 1 negative effect into a positive on Ares.
Awakened Ultimate – will apply Ability Block to the primary and adjacent targets for 2 turns (instead of 1), and will flip 3 negatives into positives on self (instead of 1).

Special – slightly increases the damage, and will apply 1 Disrupted to the primary target.
Awakened Special – will clear Barrier from all enemies, and will apply Trauma to the primary target.

Basic – will increase the damage of the attack
Awakened Basic – will slightly increase the damage and will apply 1 Immunity to Ares.

Unlock & Awakened Abilities

Ares will be released through the Battle Pass starting on July 29th, and he will have a total of six Battle Pass seasons. Players will be able to unlock him from the Premium track on Season 1, or from the standard track at the midpoint of Season 3.

Ares will have 4 Awakened Abilities that will be distributed in various ways:

  • Awakened Passive – will be available in the Standard track of the Battle Pass and most players will have this unlocked by the end of Season 5 of his Pass. (There will also be an offer for players who want to get this Awakened Ability early)
  • Awakened Ultimate – will be found in an offer after Ares is promoted to 5 Yellow Stars
  • Awakened Special – will be found in a future event or offer
  • Awakened Basic – will be found in Difficulty 4 of Ares Super Showcase (requires Ares at 4 Yellow Stars)

Red Stars for Ares will be available from the special Drums Of War Milestone event, which will run alongside all 6 Battle Pass seasons. All players will be able to earn 7 Red Stars for Ares after finishing all 6 seasons of the free track of his Battle Pass.

Diamonds and Red Stars for Ares will be made available on the Elite Store at a later date, potentially after all 6 seasons have passed.

Theory Craft

Ares, the fearsome Greek God of War, is an Olympian deity driven by an insatiable hunger for battle and conquest. Disillusioned with the tranquility of the gods, he descended to Earth, where his unmatched strength, masterful combat skills, and an arsenal of deadly weapons made him both a fearsome adversary and a powerful ally. Tired of endless conflict, Ares sought redemption and found a new purpose among Earth’s mightiest heroes, including the Avengers, transforming his warlike prowess into a force for protection and justice.

Ares is a War specialist that can cripple full teams on his own, as he doesn’t have a specific team he can be slotted in with nearly any team and still be useful or even instrumental in a victory. The main aspect of this character is the ability to steal all Positive Effects, Charged and Revive Once on Spawn from his enemies, alas only in War. His Awakened Ability will also prevent all enemies from spawning with Safeguard and this will work in all game modes. On top of that, he is blessed with high Health and Damage stats, allowing Ares to destroy any who oppose him.

Basic – Sundering Strike

Will attack the primary target for damage and will clear 3 positive effects, then he will Chain to 2 adjacent targets, dealing slightly less damage and clearing 2 positive effects.

If this Ability is Awakened, he will also gain 1 Immunity.

This is a very strong Basic ability, considering Ares’s kit. If he has an Awakened Passive, he will prevent enemies from spawning with Safeguard so they will be susceptible to the Basic. On top of that, Ares can also gain Immunity, which will make him even stronger.

Iso-8/Counterattack/Assist

The safety attack will only hit the primary target for slightly less damage, but it will still apply clear 3 positive effects and will apply Immunity to Ares, if the Basic is Awakened.

Special – Wrath Of Mars

Energy Cost: 3/3

This ability will clear all Barrier from the primary target, and then hit for damage, and apply Stun + Disrupted for 1 Turn. Then Ares will gain 1 Charged.

If the Ability is Awakened, this will instead clear Barrier from all enemies and will apply Trauma (only in War) to the primary target, preventing them from clearing Stun or gaining any other positive effects.

Having a strong ability that can Stun and clear all Barrier from multiple enemies on such a short cooldown will be very beneficial, this will make Ares a great choice for Dark Dimensions or any other game modes on top of being perfect in War. This will also help Ares gain Charged in other game modes (in War he can steal Charged on Spawn)

Ultimate – Furious Whirlwind

Energy Cost: 5/5

This Ability will attack the primary target first, dealing damage and Draining 25% of the damage back as Health. Then it will attack the primary and adjacent targets with piercing damage, still Draining for 25%, but also applying Bleed for 2 turns and Ability Block for 1 turn to all of the targets he hits. Then Ares will Flip 1 negative effect into a positive on himself.

This attack is Unavoidable and cannot be blocked.

If Awakened, this Ability will apply Ability Block for 2 turns and will flip 3 negative effects into positive.

This Ultimate offers a great combination of high damage and stellar control, which can often determine the winner of the fight and Ares can use it on his first turn, which makes it even better. The cooldown is not too bad and the ability isn’t tied to just war, so it will be very useful in all other game modes as well.

Passive – God Of War

On Spawn, Ares will gain Safeguard for 1 turn.

In War, after all other characters’ On Spawn effects trigger, Ares will copy and clear all positive effects, Charged and Revive Once from all enemies and will apply it to himself. This clear cannot be resisted.

This is an incredible Ability, making War truly the domain of Ares. This ensures that the enemies will have no advantage on Spawn. While Ares can clear all Revive Once from everyone, he himself will gain only 1 Revive Once. As for Charged, he will clear all Charged from all enemies but will gain the same amount of Charged as the enemy with the highest number of Charged on him (say there are 2 enemies, one with 3 Charged and the other with 5 Charged, Ares will clear all Charged but will gain only 5 Charged)

This on Spawn Ability becomes even more devastating once we have Ares’s Passive Ability Awakened because then he will prevent all enemies from spawning with Safeguard. Safeguard prevention will also work in all game modes, making him an excellent plug-and-play character. He will also gain Safeguard for 2 turns when the ability is Awakened.

On Turn, if Ares has Charged, he fills his Speed Bar by 20% and loses 1 Charged. While he’s not very fast, only having 118 Speed, this Passive Speed Bar gain will allow him to compensate for that.

While Charged, Ares cannot be Stunned, and all non-Mythic enemies cannot gain Charged or Immunity.

Conclusion

Ares is true to his name, he will indeed be the God Of War, Alliance War in our case. Once he has some decent Yellow Stars on him and he has his Passive Ability Awakened, he will be one of the best plug-and-play War characters.

Even outside of War, he still has a lot of use cases because his Health and Damage stats are incredible, and his other abilities provide a great amount of Controlling effects. It is evident that Ares will be a mainstay in War and other game modes as a plug-and-play character for a long time, making him a great addition to the MSF.
