Black Order

VIDEO ADVERTISEMENT

Introduction

Thanos was one of the first characters added to the game after the global launch, but he was used with Guardians of the Galaxy, Minn-Erva, and Vision for a long time. This so-called BKT (Best Kree Team) was popular among the players. Once Black Order was added, Thanos became a key member of that team, which is fitting for a leader.

Initially, Black Order were widely used and dominant in Arena. Nowadays they can be good on War Offense, owing to a small rework that they received.

Utility

  • Alliance War

Black Order is an older team at this point, but they had some new life poured into them with a small rework. Now they are mainly a War-focused team with bonuses that allow them to be somewhat decent there.

That said, to be very effective they will require a lot of investment, so if you haven’t worked on them until now it’s best to ignore this team. The rework was mostly meant for players who heavily invested in Black Order during the Knowhere Siege War Event, where that team was greatly boosted with Room bonuses.

Team Placement & Turn Order

Cull Obsidian is the Protector of the team, so his place is in one of the corners. Proxima and Corvus are relatively low health, and even with Defensive buffs applied to them, they can go down easily from the splash damage, so next to Cull we could place Thanos. Since originally Thanos was a Protector character, his Health is big enough to handle splash damage. After that, we could place Corvus between Proxima and Ebony since he will go into stealth and break Chain attacks.

With even one of the Black Order members present, Thanos will get a big boost to Speed Bar and will go first, Proxima is next and then Thanos will go again. After that, the order is as follows Ebony Maw, Corvus Glaive, Cull Obsidian.

Iso-8 Classes

  • Thanos – Raider
  • Proxima Midnight – Skirmisher
  • Ebony Maw – Healer
  • Corvus Glaive – Striker
  • Cull Obsidian – Striker

Thanos’s Basic will hit multiple targets and his Ultimate ability will hit everyone for high Damage, so Raider will increase his damage potential.

Proxima can apply a few debuffs, namely Stun, Slow, and Offense Down, To make sure the Stun lands Skirmisher is what we need. Plus she will always assist Corvus Glaive, so she can remove Negative Effects or apply Vulnerable more often.

Ebony Maw is the supporting character, and he provides healing for the team with his Ultimate, but that ability has a long cooldown. So with the Healer class Ebony will be able to Heal his allies each turn.

Corvus is a stealthy damage dealer, so Striker is the optimal choice for him.

Cull can be a Striker, just to increase the damage output. He could also be a Protector, to increase his survivability.

Team T4’s

Essential

  • Ebony Maw – Ultimate, Passive
  • Thanos – Ultimate, Special
  • Cull Obsidian – Passive
  • Corvus Glaive – Passive, Special, Ultimate
  • Proxima Midnight – Passive, Ultimate

Ebony Maw’s Ultimate will Reduce the enemy’s Speed Bar by 25% and fill it for his allies +25%

Thanos’s Ultimate will substantially increase the Damage and Drain of the attack and his Special will apply Taunt for 2 turns to Cull Obsidian.

Cull’s Passive will get a self-heal for 40% after he drops below 30% Health for the first time.

Corvus Glaive’s the main damage dealer for the team, especially because he and Proxima will always Assist each other on all attacks. His Passive increases the Damage of the team and the Crit Chance for Corvus when he’s in Stealth.

His Ultimate will clear Stun from all Cosmic Villains and will have a big increase to his damage. Special attack will also see a massive increase to his Damage.

Proxima’s Passive will increase the team’s Focus and will always clear Stealth from the most injured target on Proxima’s turn. Her Ultimate will increase the Speed Bar reduction that she applies and will gain an assist from Corvus.

Recommended

  • Thanos – Passive, Basic
  • Ebony Maw – Basic, Special
  • Corvus Glaive – Basic
  • Proxima Midnight – Basic, Special
  • Cull Obsidians – Ultimate, Special

Basic’s for Proxima and Corvus will guarantee that they will always Assist each other on Basic Attacks. And Special for Proxima will apply the Offense Down to 2 turns(instead of 1)

Thanos’s Basic will receive +1,000% Focus for this attack, which should help clear Taunt from enemies with high Resistance. (like Hulk) and his Passive will lower the Damage Reduction for Hero Bio enemies that do not have Defense Up.

Ebony Maw’s Basic attack will deal more Piercing Damage, Maw has long cooldowns so his Basic Attack will be used fairly often. His Special ability will apply Defense Up to the team for 2 turns(instead of 1) and will clear all Deflect and minor Deflect from all enemies.

Cull’s Special will just boost his self-heal by a small amount and his Ultimate will moderately increase the Damage he will inflict.

Team Red Stars

Most of the characters can be left at 4 Red Stars. Spending more Promotion Credits on them is not recommended, not unless you have a lot of spare credits. But ff that is the case, Thanos and Corvus will benefit a lot from high Red Stars because that will increase their Damage. Cull can also go up to 5 red Star to be a better Protector.

Farming Locations

  • Thanos – Cosmic 2-9, Gamma Raid Orbs
  • Corvus Glaive – Arena Store, Milestone III Orbs
  • Proxima Midnight – Blitz Store, Milestone III Orbs
  • Cull Obsidian – Raid Store, Gamma Raid Orbs, Milestone III Orbs
  • Ebony Maw – Legendary Event

On Spawn Buffs

  • Thanos – Offense Up, Defense Up, Speed Up, Immunity, Regeneration for 2 turns, 2 Stacks of Deathproof
  • Ebony Maw – Immunity, Regeneration for 2 turns, 2 Stacks of Deathproof
  • Proxima Midnight – Speed Up for 1 turn
  • Cull Obsidian – Defense Up for 2 turns
  • Corvus Glaive – Offense Up for 2 turns

Technically Thanos doesn’t get those buffs on Spawn, but on his first turn. Ebony Maw fills Thanos’s Speed Bar by +100% so Thanos will always go first which can virtually considered as on Spawn. That said, you should be careful since because of that technicality Black Order wont work well in Reactor, or against teams that stop Speed Bar generation on Spawn, like New Avengers.

Team Mechanics

The main mechanic for this team is the Infinity Stones. Each of the Black Order members presents the stones when Thanos takes his first turn and each of the stones grants a specific Positive Effect to Thanos.

  • Space Stone grants Speed Up for 2 turns – presented by Proxima
  • Mind Stone grants Offense Up for 2 turns – presented by Corvus
  • Power Stone grants Defense Up for 2 turns – presented by Cull
  • Reality Stone grants him 2 Regeneration
  • Time Stone grants him 2 Deathproof
  • Soul Stone grants him Immunity for 2 turns – the last 3 stones are presented by Ebony Maw

Thanos will take his first turn immediately because he will get +100% Speed Bar from Ebony Maw’s Passive. Then he will get the stones from all Black Order members, gain the corresponding Positive Effects, and become Empowered. To become Empowered he needs only one Black Order member to be present, but he won’t get the Infinity Stones from those missing characters, and hence won’t get the buffs as well.

When Empowered, Thanos can spread all his Positive effects to Black Order allies, flip all positive effects on his enemies, and attack them all for high Piercing Damage. His Passive will also prevent Bio enemies from getting Charged, if he has at least 3 Black Order allies.

Ebony Maw is the Legendary character of this team, and his main function is to sustain his team with defensive buffs and Healing. His Ultimate also has a percentage Health Steal attack, that can be useful in Dark Dimensions. The only issue is that his abilities are on a long cooldown.

His Passive also has a small charge mechanic, that was introduced in order to counter Phoenix. Whenever a Hero Controller dies, Maw gets Charged. When Charged, he will apply Ability Block to all Hero Controller enemies and then lose charged.

Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive work well in tandem, they will always assist on each other’s attacks and remove positive effects. Corvus is more of a stealth damage dealer, while Proxima tries to control the fight with Stun and Slow.

Cull Obsidian is a Protector that can hit hard. On his Ultimate attack, he gets Bonus Damage for each Deathproof that he has, and he can get a maximum of 5 Deathproofs.

Combat Tips & Tricks

After the rework their offensive potential in War increased, the can be a good option to counter teams like Death Seed, Unlimited X-Men, and even Gamma under the right circumstances.

The main advantage they get when countering Gamma is that She-Hulk, Hulk, and Red Hulk won’t get Charged, which will greatly hinder that team. Thanos will take the first turn and clear Taunt from Hulk with his Basic, while also spreading all Positive Effects (excluding Taunt and Speed Up) from self to his Black Order allies.

After that, the main task would be to eliminate Red Hulk as quickly as possible. This team can have a decent success rate when punching across or punching down, especially if your Thanos and Corvus are the 2 strongest team members. But to have the most reliable results you need to invest more into upgrading their Abilities to the max and increasing their Gear Tier.

Punching Up even slightly adds a lot of risk since in some cases you might be able to get rid of Red Hulk, but the rest of the Gamma may crush you because they possess better sustain and higher offensive potential. RNG will also play an important role here because you could often lose.

The best use for this new team can be to counter Death Seed for instance. Thanos will go before Magneto and will apply Immunity to everyone, so Magneto’s Blinds won’t land. After that, if you take Dark Beast out quickly you have a great chance of winning. Important to note that in live war if the Medbay room is still up, it is best to save Thanos’s special attack until after Safeguard expires on Death Seed. (Secret Strike War Event). Against Death Seed, you could pull off 200-300K punch-ups as long as your and enemies’ teams are well-balanced in terms of collection power. That can be RNG-dependent, so it is safer to do smaller punch-ups.

They can also counter Unlimited X-Men, Underworld, and all the older teams that they could before.

There is also a possibility of using Black Order with Apocalypse(instead of Cull) to counter Knowhere. On their own Black Order does not stand a chance, Knowhere has superior damage output and sustain. But, Thanos will prevent Nova from getting Charged and that will allow you to control Nova with Ability Block or Stun. Apocalypse’s main use here would be to provide the damage and sustain needed to overcome Knowhere. Nonetheless, it can only work reliably on punch downs. But it is an interesting outlier.

If Black Order are on defense, you can easily counter them with Eternals, Infinity Watch, and even Black Order themselves. In case of a mirror match, just make sure that your Thanos will flip with his Special after the enemy Thanos flipped.

More detailed information about the counters can be found on our War Counters page.
