Groot Guide | Marvel Rivals
Biography
I am Groot! ‘Nuff said! This giant, walking, talking tree is a flora colossus, grown on an alien Planet X. As a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot has saved many galaxies many times. However, it was during a routine scouting mission that he became entangled with the rest here.
Star-Lord, Rocket, Mantis, and Groot were on a ship when it was shot down on its way to Klyntar. They ended up here, separated from the rest of the team. Now, Knull, the dark king of Klyntar, wants to harness Groot’s regenerative abilities and empower his hybrid symbiotes.

Abilities
Normal Attack (Left Click): Vine Strike – Launch vines to attack enemies. Just spam at them, and never stop. It has more range than people think. You can shorten the animation a little bit by pressing the melee attack between your shots. It doesn’t have a critical hit so no point at aiming at the head level.
| PROJECTILE SPEED | 120m/s |
| MAXIMUM DISTANCE | 20m |
| ATTACK INTERVAL | 0.7s |
| DAMAGE | 70 |
Strangling Prison (Q) – Fire a massive vine cluster that pulls nearby enemies to its center and Imprison them. Good for catching fast-moving heroes due to its range. Great combo with his Spore Bomb (Right Click). Also if you call it for your teammates they can follow up with their abilities and ults like Iron Man’s Invincible Pulse Cannon (Q) or Namor’s Horn of Proteus (Q). Even just saying to spam in it sometimes will be enough.
| PROJECTILE SPEED | 60m/s |
| RANGE | 8m spherical radius |
| DAMAGE | The projectile deals 10 damage, while the spell field deals 70 damage. While imprisoning enemies, it deals 20 damage every 0.5s |
| SPECIAL EFFECT | Imprison enemies for 3.5s |
Thornlash Wall (LShift) – Target a location and grow a Thornlash Wall. When Awakened, it strikes nearby enemies attacked by Groot and his allies. Best to position it behind the enemy you are shooting, it will do crazy amounts of damage, especially if you stack a couple of them. Also great for dividing enemies from the rest of their team. When the enemy is in choke sometimes is good to place it next to the passage, glued to the wall so they have to go out to destroy it.
| MAXIMUM DISTANCE | 15m |
| THORNLASH WALL HEALTH | 250 |
| COOLDOWN | 2 charges, with each charge taking 6s to recharge |
| SPECIAL EFFECT | Thornlash Wall deals 60 damage every 0.5s |
Ironwood Wall (E) – Target a location and grow an Ironwood Wall. When Awakened, it grants Bonus Health to Groot when nearby enemies take damage. Perfect for blocking incoming damage and making Groot even more tanky and also the same as his LShift, Ironwood Wall is even better for dividing, for example, their tank from strategist, becoming an easy target to focus down, due to it having more hp and its harder to torn down.
| MAXIMUM DISTANCE | 10m |
| THORNLASH WALL HEALTH | 700 |
| COOLDOWN | 8s |
| SPECIAL EFFECT | Ironwood Wall heals 40 Bonus Health per second, up to 250 Bonus Health |
Spore Bomb (Right Click) – Throw an explosive Spore Bomb that splits into multiple small explosive spores. Great combo with your ult but feel free to use it often because it’s not that hard to hit and it’s free damage.
| PROJECTILE SPEED | 60m/s |
| RANGE | Spore Bomb generates a spell field with a 5m spherical radius, while small explosive spores create a spell field with a 1.5m spherical radius |
| DAMAGE | The projectile itself deals no damage, while Spore Bomb deals 55 damage and explosive spores deal 10 damage |
| COOLDOWN | 6s |
| SPECIAL EFFECT | Spore Bomb explodes into 6 explosive spores |
Flora Colossus (Passive) – Wooden walls near Groot will Awaken, activating an extra effect. Thornlash will do damage to enemies while Ironwood will give Groot extra hp. A cylindrical spell field with a 20m radius and a height of 40m.
– Furious Flora, every third melee attack he does will slightly launch up the enemy.
Strengths
Overall a pretty straightforward tank that feels stable and really hard to focus down, especially when his healers are alive!
He is great at denying space and holding points. He can block the whole choke almost by himself sometimes.
The Groot is also a great pick for beginners who want to play the Vanguard role.
Weaknesses
Has no abilities that can counter heroes who can fly and move fast around him. Also, he is very easy to hit due too his size.
Also if he had a little bit more hp, he would be S Tier but I don’t think that’s good for the game because people who already played Overwatch will tell you how annoying is if the hero who has a tone of shield is meta. So let’s hope he stays like this, a stable tank for new players.
Counters
Iron Man, Punisher, Wolverine
Iron Man can keep long distances and do so much damage that Groot can’t do anything about it. The only thing I can recommend here is to try to create as much space as you can for your duelists to deal with him.
Punisher does so much damage even in his turret mode that Groot wood walls feel like they are made of glass and if he has Rocket Racoon in his team they are as good as no wall at all.
To deny him as much space as you can, try not to spam them, use it one by one to make him waste as much ammo and time as you can, while somebody deals with him.
Wolverine will destroy you if you are not aware all the time where he is.
Team-Ups
Even though Groot’s team-up with Rocket Raccoon and Jeff doesn’t do anything for Groot, whenever the Raccoon attaches to Groot or Jeff, they will take less damage, making them really hard to deal with!
But it’s also very risky because any knockback or cc will make them fall off and you can imagine how it feels for support to be in the middle of tanks fighting.
Synergy
Besides the Rocket Raccoon that he can save, Doctor Strange and Magneto make for an ideal off-tank to pair with Groot as they are both a part of a poke composition.
Also, every hero that wants to feel safe and hold angels while poking like Namor, Punisher, or Hela feels amazing to play with because you feel far more useful while someone is actually using the space you created.
Tips and Tricks
Focus on using your wall to separate targets that are easy to focus down from their team, allowing you to pick easy kills.
Use your walls to negate incoming damage and provide space It is simple as, if they go backward you push and use it, if they forward you back up while walling off angles from which they can shoot.
Call your ult to your teammates so they can follow up.
Position your Thornlash Wall (LShift) so they can do damage to the target you are shooting, u will be surprised ho much damage Groot does.
