How to Climb Ranks in Competitive | Marvel Rivals
Intro
Even tho the Competitive mode is very fun, it sometimes feels tough to rank up, especially if you play solo q. Here, we are gonna try to help out and learn together how to have more impact on your games so we get that Eternity faster.
Each role has to dominate the game in its own way so we separated guides into three categories.
Vanguard
Sometimes feels impossible to play this role due to the amount of damage characters can do in this game and how fast can your teammates die. Let’s see what can we do to improve the chances and help our team.
- Positioning, as you probably know is the hardest part about Vanguards. Where you stand on the map will mean a lot because you are there to create the space for the rest of your team.
My biggest advice here is to realize if you can’t get healed in the middle of a fight, to try to avoid a little bit of damage by playing closer to cover and in the line of sight of your Strategists. If you see that they can’t heal you even after you do all of that, try to realize who the biggest threat on the enemy team is by pressing the tab and looking at the enemy’s score.
If you see an enemy duelist having crazy K/D try to do anything you can to deny him space and even kill him if possible. - Damage is the key component of this game and that’s why you should do it all the time. No matter which role you play. In this game, you can make crazy stats by using every opportunity you can to shoot at the enemy team.
Some Vanguards are better at it than the other but that doesn’t mean others are bad at it, it’s just they have to focus on other things as well. Hitting your enemies will make them move backward and that’s also a way to create space and push forward providing your duelists better angles and advantage in the next fight. Also, you charge your ult a lot faster and we all know how important ults are in this game. - Abilities are crucial in any hero shooter. Just play what your Vanguard is good at. For example Vanguard with a shield can hold long lines and receive a bit of damage for your team, but Vanguards that love to be in your face usually have problems against long-range characters so you want to avoid those lines of sight as much as possible. Just don’t receive unnecessary damage by using your cooldowns to cover the distance. Also, know that sometimes you need a cooldown or two to escape from a fight so plan for that before you engage.
- Counter Picking is something I would recommend after you master your character, then is time to learn the new one. But if you climb to Diamond and above be ready for the ban system and also some maps and team comps need different Vanguards to work. Helping your team by figuring out which character you need to play will climb you in no time. On the maps where your team has long sights, and they are playing poke comp, a shield tank would help a lot. In situation where they play some dive comp and you need to move fast, I would recommend switching to more mobile characters so it’s easier for you to have more impact on the fight, because that’s what we are aiming for always.
Duelist
Even tho you hit your shots and play well sometimes it’s very hard because your enemies always have a better position and somehow kill your team even faster. We will try to figure out how can we turn the tides on our side even if things are going the wrong way.
- Positioning will help you stay alive a lot more. Playing constantly close to cover, so you have an escape tool especially when you play slower kind of characters will be essential. Don’t forget that this is a third-person game so you can check behind the wall even before they see you.
Another thing is to position according to what your enemy is playing. If you are playing a long-range character that likes to keep a distance, watch out if they have some kind of flanker that wants to come from off angles or from your back. If that is the case be in line of sight of your Strategists and look around for threats before they come.
Of course, it’s the other way around when you play close-range character. Try to avoid long sights and try to surprise enemies from positions where they can’t do much to outplay you. Always play to your advantage and every character has one. - The threat, removing the opponent that has a lot of impact on the game is the key sometimes. Realizing who kills your Strategists, or stops your Vanguars from pushing forward, makes your task easier. Press the tab to see who from the enemy team has the most impact on the game, or listen for who your team complains about a lot, that should be your primary target. If you see that enemy Strategist having 0 deaths, and your Vanguards are losing mid-fight, try to figure a way how to put more pressure on them. If your duelists are dying to some of the opponent ones, try to make his job harder, by shooting and denying him space.
- Abilities, sometimes when you play characters that are more similar to classic FPS games, and this happened to me a lot at the beginning, you forget that this kind of game gives you abilities. Using your movement or CC ability in dangerous spots can win you the duel.
On the other side, when you play a fast-moving character with a lot of tools, remember that escaping and staying alive is sometimes more important than killing the enemy. Don’t use everything to get to the enemy, save some movement for the trip home.
Strategist
This is the role, that keeps the group alive and can see the whole playing field. Sometimes it feels like no matter how much you keep your team alive you still lose.
- Positioning is very important for every role, but the most for this one. The longer you are alive your tank can play aggressively giving your team more space. So realizing where the damage is coming from, and how to utilize cover on the map will make you a top-tier Strategist player.
Depending on which strategist you play, you will position accordingly, meaning if you don’t have any movement abilities you will have to play at a safe distance. But don’t forget you can also move a little bit more aggressively when the whole team is pushing, we don’t want to be AFK ever.
There is also sometimes a need to play close to your duelist due to the fact that he can help you defeat the annoying enemy flanker who is always on your back. Don’t forget to call for help if you need it because this kind of game can be very chaotic and people don’t always realize where everyone is. - Aiming, even tho some Strategists don’t have to hit heads all the time, most of them do, so don’t forget to practice your aim as much as you can. This will make you from A Tier to S tier player. If you can hit an enemy Duelist in the head, he will think twice before the next time he attacks you.
- Damage, I know the Strategist role can heal, but doing damage is also very important. I’m not saying don’t heal your team and do the damage all the time, just you need to multitask, and that’s why this role feels hard sometimes. Depending on how much damage and healing you did before the enemy Strategist will result in who will get ultimate first, and we all know how broken Strategiest ults are.
So when you see your team having an advantage, feel free to push with them, shoot those enemies, and don’t forget to fight back when they push you. - Abilities, a lot of Strategists have game-winning ones. Hitting CC on target that is going to ult and remove the whole of your team, or resurrecting your tank in the middle of the fight can carry you to the top. But a lot of them need practice so don’t rush before you can master them.
